The US women’s basketball team clinched a record eighth consecutive Olympic gold, outshining their French counterparts, who were buoyed by their fans’ enthusiastic support. This victory at the latest Olympics marks an unparalleled streak in the sport, dating back to the Atlanta Games in 1996. It sets a new record for consecutive golds in any team sport, surpassing the US men’s basketball team’s seven straight wins from 1936 to 1968.
US forward Alyssa Thomas emphasized the team’s gold standard goal, regardless of the competition’s location. The finals at Bercy Arena held a unique significance as it was the first time in Olympic history that the men’s and women’s finals featured the same nations competing against each other.
The French team, re-energized by a come-from-behind victory against Belgium in the semi-finals, showcased their resilience and spirit. Gabby Williams, a standout player who has achieved significant success in collegiate basketball in the US and European leagues, highlighted the strong emotional bond and mutual support among the French players.
Facing the US team, known for its seamless play and rich talent pool, including WNBA stars like Sabrina Ionescu and the legendary Diana Taurasi aiming for her sixth Olympic gold, France understood the challenge ahead. Ionescu praised the team’s synergistic style, while Taurasi’s storied career was a source of inspiration for her teammates.

The US team entered the final fully aware that anything less than gold would not meet their high expectations. Meanwhile, France, returning to the final for the first time since 2012 and inspired by their fans, knew their uphill battle but remained hopeful for a historic win.
“We all understood, coming into this team, what our strengths were,” said WNBA sharp-shooter Sabrina Ionescu.
“When we play, it looks effortless and easy, because we just make simple plays,” she said.
Ultimately, the US team’s blend of experience, talent, and cohesion reaffirmed their dominance in women’s basketball, setting a new Olympic record and continuing their legacy.
