Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s manager, emphasized that he isn’t a magician who can instantly solve the team’s issues after their disheartening 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at home on Sunday. The Dutchman is feeling the pressure just three games into the new Premier League season following a 2-1 loss to Brighton last weekend.
Despite a surprising FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May, which helped him retain his job, Ten Hag’s team finished eighth last season—United’s lowest-ever Premier League finish. Even so, the former Ajax coach received a contract extension and a significant £200 million ($262 million) investment in new players during the transfer window.
However, hopes of a fresh start at Old Trafford have quickly faded, with Liverpool easily winning in Arne Slot’s first major test after replacing Jurgen Klopp.
In his post-match press conference, Ten Hag acknowledged the challenges ahead. “I’m not Harry Potter; I can’t wave a wand and fix everything instantly,” he said.
“We’ve only played three games this season, and we need to build a new team. We have young players and others who need time to integrate. Some players didn’t even play the full 90 minutes today. We will improve, and by the end of the season, I’m confident we’ll have a strong chance to win a trophy.”
One of the most notable issues from United’s previous season was the performance of Casemiro, who was at fault for Liverpool’s first two goals. The Brazilian lost possession twice, leading to Luis Diaz’s goal, and was substituted at halftime for 20-year-old Toby Collyer.
When asked about Casemiro’s future in the team, Ten Hag defended the veteran, stating, “Everyone in football must take responsibility. Casemiro has achieved so much in his career and will continue to contribute.”
United have not seriously competed for the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired 11 years ago, and this season seems to be no different. A six-point gap already separates them from Liverpool and reigning champions Manchester City.
“It’s painful, especially for our fans,” Ten Hag admitted. “But we must stay humble, congratulate Liverpool, and focus on moving forward.”
