Former President Donald Trump was rushed to safety after an alleged assassination attempt at his Florida golf course. Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is now in custody.
The incident unfolded when Secret Service agents spotted a rifle barrel emerging from some bushes. Reacting quickly, they opened fire, although Trump was around 300 to 500 yards away from the scene at the time. Officials later found an AK-47-style weapon, a scope, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera at the site.
Witnesses reported seeing the suspect fleeing the area and jumping into a black Nissan. Thanks to a photo of the vehicle’s license plate, authorities tracked it down in Martin County, where local sheriff’s deputies arrested the suspect. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw praised the quick coordination between law enforcement, saying, “We alerted Martin County, they found the vehicle, and detained the guy.”
Trump reassured supporters in an email that he was “safe and well” and declared, “Nothing will slow me down. I will never surrender!” This incident comes just two months after another assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, where a gunman grazed Trump’s ear during a rally.
The Secret Service acknowledged the event on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “protective incident” and confirming the investigation. Sheriff Bradshaw praised the Secret Service agent who spotted the rifle barrel, explaining that the agent had moved ahead of Trump’s position on the golf course, allowing them to engage the suspect.
In response, security has been significantly heightened around Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and the nearby West Palm Beach golf course.
US media has identified the suspect as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh from Hawaii, who has a criminal record and a history of calling for foreign fighters to join the war in Ukraine. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, both briefed on the situation, condemned the violence and expressed relief that Trump was unharmed.
