“Surrender Yourself!!”, IG to Businessman Jimi Wanjigi

Police Raid Jimi Wanjigi's Home

Police have issued a statement urging Safina Party leader Jimmy Wanjigi to surrender himself to the authorities. This statement was issued hours after the police had laid siege to his home in Muthaiga and impounded one of his vehicles. The Acting Police IG Gilbert Masengali has indicated that Wanjigi is now a wanted man.

“Our intelligence has shown that security threats will infiltrate protests with the intent of causing havoc. Today, we have intercepted a personal vehicle, Prado, in Muthaiga at the Residence of Jimmy Wanjigi. We have also recovered four teargas canisters from the vehicle,” he said.

There were also claims that police communication devices, two Motorola gadgets, seven assorted chargers for pocket phones, one mobile phone as well as grenades were found alongside the teargas canisters. However, investigators are still on the ground to ascertain all these claims. The businessman stands accused of funding some goons to infiltrate the peaceful protests and cause mayhem.

The businessman-cum-politician’s lawyer, Nelson Osiemo, has accused the police of harassment and misuse of power after they laid siege to his client’s home in Muthaiga amid nane nane protests.

“It is just political harassment that every other Kenyan and he is facing. It has happened to him before, and we are prepared for any eventuality, “said the lawyer.
Enraged by the police actions on their home, Wanjigi’s son says that the events are not shocking and it is not the first time that they have been raided in their home. Mr. Wanjigi has not come out publicly to address the IG’s allegations.

The businessman’s home was raided similarly in 2017, where police officers assaulted his wife, Irene Nzisa Wanjigi, for recording the video of the events that led to the destruction of their property. When Wanjigi addressed the issue, he called the events “absolute persecution.”

The recent events occurred as a result of intelligence information that the police have on the nane nane protests, but the police say that detectives are still investigating the incident. The IG insists that they have already arrested a suspect and is calling upon Jimi Wanjigi to present himself to the nearest police station.
