Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Ends Presidential Bid, Backs Trump

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ended his campaign on Friday, announcing his endorsement of Republican candidate Donald Trump. Kennedy, who initially ran as a Democrat, is known for his famous family name in American politics.

At a press conference, Kennedy revealed that after multiple discussions with Trump and his team, he found common ground on several key issues, including border security and free speech. “While we still differ on some matters, we are aligned on others,” Kennedy stated. Later that day, he appeared with Trump at a rally in Arizona, where the crowd enthusiastically welcomed him.

Trump praised Kennedy, saying his campaign had raised crucial issues often overlooked in the U.S. political landscape. However, political analysts are uncertain if this endorsement will significantly impact Trump’s standing in the closely contested race against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the November 5 election.

Kennedy, 70, plans to remove his name from the ballots in 10 battleground states but will remain a candidate in other states. He emphasized his commitment to issues such as combating chronic illness and eliminating harmful chemicals from the environment and food supply.

During the Arizona rally, Trump announced that, if elected, he would establish a presidential commission on assassination attempts and release files related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s uncle.

Kennedy, who entered the race in April 2023 as a challenger to President Joe Biden, later chose to run as an independent. Initially, his candidacy gained traction, but recent polls show a significant decline in support. A November 2023 Reuters/Ipsos poll had Kennedy at 20%, but by this month, his support had dropped to 4%.

Kennedy’s endorsement has drawn mixed reactions. His sister, Kerry Kennedy, criticized the decision, calling it a betrayal of family values. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign sees the endorsement as a positive development. Some speculate that Kennedy may be eyeing a role in a future Trump administration.
