Republicans Launch Impeachment Bid Against Biden Amid Convention

On Monday, the beginning of the Democratic National Convention was marked by a significant move from Congressional Republicans, who introduced a case for impeaching President Joe Biden. Although this political strategy is scarcely expected to progress significantly, it represents a notable attack from the Republican side.

Issued by three influential House committees controlled by Republicans, the impeachment case charges President Biden with engaging in corrupt activities linked to his son Hunter Biden’s international business dealings.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan expressed strong accusations against Biden, stating “conclusively” that Biden had “abused his public office for the private financial benefit of the Biden family and Biden business associates.”

Despite these allegations, the Republicans have failed to produce concrete evidence directly linking President Biden to benefiting from his son’s business activities or involvement in them.

The accusations primarily rest on suggestive connections between Biden and his son, focusing on actions possibly taken outside Biden’s term as vice president under Barack Obama.

As President Biden readies to make a significant speech at the Democratic convention, passing on his political legacy to Vice President Kamala Harris, he has firmly denied any wrongdoing about his son’s business efforts in Ukraine and China.

For an extended period, Republicans have leveraged Hunter Biden’s foreign associations and his struggles as a recovering drug addict to mount pressure on the president. However, their extensive efforts to compile a credible case for impeaching Biden—often viewed as retaliatory for the impeachment proceedings against Republican Donald Trump—have not led to a formal House vote.

Given the Republicans’ slim majority, it remains to be seen if this report could culminate in an impeachment vote against Biden, a task that would demand virtually unanimous Republican support to stand against Democratic opposition.

Should an impeachment occur, it’s anticipated that the Senate, under Democratic control, would vote to acquit President Biden.
