Raila Odinga Faces Hostile Reception in Kisii as Youth Protest Political Alliance
Kisii, Kenya – Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Saturday faced an unexpected hostile reception at Gusii Stadium, where he had attended the unveiling of Shabana FC’s 2024/2025 jerseys sponsored by SportPesa. A section of the youthful crowd heckled Odinga, protesting his recent political alignment with President William Ruto’s government.
The charged atmosphere momentarily disrupted the event as Kisii Governor Simba Arati attempted to calm the restless audience. Arati urged the youth to allow the leaders to address them and focus on supporting the local football team. However, discontent lingered among the youth, who view the newfound cooperation between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as a betrayal.
Odinga, who has long been a political favorite in the Gusii region, has seen his support wane following the announcement of his collaboration with the ruling administration. Some residents feel that the move contradicts his long-standing opposition to Ruto’s leadership, which they consider oppressive.

Accompanying Odinga at the event were Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and Migori Senator Eddy Oketch. Despite the initial hostility, the situation eventually calmed, and the event proceeded as planned. Odinga opted to cut short his speech, instead announcing a donation of Ksh. 1 million in support of Shabana FC.
The incident highlights the growing political tensions in the region ahead of future elections, as youth voices become increasingly influential in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
