At the Democratic convention in Chicago this Tuesday, Barack Obama is set to endorse Kamala Harris as the future of the party and its groundbreaking nominee—both as the first Black and South Asian woman. Obama revealed via social media his intentions to highlight the election’s critical nature in his speech at the Democratic National Convention, championing Harris and Tim Walz as the optimal choices for the nation’s leadership.
Obama, celebrated for his oratory skills and being the inaugural Black president, remains hugely influential. His convention speech is anticipated to elevate the excitement in Chicago to unprecedented heights, building on the momentum from President Joe Biden’s emotionally charged address.
The unity within the Democratic Party and Harris’s favourable polling hint at a strong conviction to overcome Donald Trump in the upcoming election. The enthusiasm surrounding the event draws comparisons to Obama’s 2008 victory, with high expectations for Harris’s acceptance speech.
The convention’s energy is further amplified by Obama’s effect on attendees, as delegate Ted Hiserodt notes his capability to energize crowds. In a strategic move to contrast with Trump, Harris is scheduled to rally in Milwaukee, a venue recently graced by Trump for the Republican convention. This seems to be a direct challenge to Trump, who has critiqued Harris’s appeal and policies.
Donald Trump, concurrently attempting to divert attention from the Democratic convention, will criticize Harris’s policies in Michigan, maintaining his contentious approach towards her. Despite calls for a more policy-centric campaign, Trump insists on not altering his strategy, disparagingly commenting on Harris’s intelligence to CBS News: “I don’t consider that an insult. That’s just a fact,” he asserted.
Amidst preparations for Harris’s pivotal speech, Doug Emhoff, poised to be the inaugural “first gentleman,” is also slated to speak. Meanwhile, Biden’s heartfelt concession speech, in which he prioritized the country over personal ambitions, and Hillary Clinton’s address, which highlighted the breakthrough nature of Harris’s candidacy, were notable. The convention also faced protests, with more expected as it progressed.
