Nairobi Street Food Kiosk Shut for Health Violations

Nairobi County officials have taken action against a local kiosk in the city’s central area known for serving popular street food items like smochas, kebabs, eggs, and smokies to various vendors due to its failure to uphold cleanliness standards.

Geoffrey Mosiria, the Nairobi Environment chief officer, brought the unsanitary conditions of this kiosk to light through a viral video. The footage highlighted how the food, much-loved by many Kenyans, was being prepared in extremely unhygienic circumstances, with dirty cooking equipment and the reuse of oil among the evident issues.

Mosiria pointed out the significant health hazards such conditions pose to the public, emphasizing the risk of disease transmission these environments create. He recalled a recent unannounced inspection by county officials where the kiosk owner was advised to shut down temporarily for a thorough cleanup before resuming business. Despite agreeing, the owner had not improved when the officials returned for a follow-up.

“We recently came to this facility and found that the environment is dirty and spoke to the owner to clean the place because our job is not to close a business but to facilitate their work,” Mosiria stated.

He added, “We told him to close for three days and clean the place because they have a lot of customers. He agreed to the request. Today, we returned to monitor whether he complied and found the place as before.”

Mosiria affirmed the county’s determination to shut down the establishment to enforce compliance with health regulations and to motivate other food businesses to maintain cleanliness.

He underscored the broader implications of allowing such negligence, stating, “As the county government, we won’t allow one person to destroy millions of people’s health. We must take action according to the law that will make the owner clean the business to make it conducive.”

Moreover, Mosiria called on citizens to report unsanitary food service establishments, pledging ongoing surprise inspections throughout Nairobi. The exposure of this incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for tighter regulatory oversight of street food vendors. Comments flooding the internet emphasized the need for transparency in food preparation areas and applauded the city council’s proactive stance.
