The race for Mt. Kenya’s political leadership has intensified, with over 300 Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) from the region throwing their support behind Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki. The MCAs, representing counties like Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyeri, and Embu, announced their decision in a joint statement, declaring Kindiki as the region’s preferred political leader.
This declaration follows the recent endorsement of Kindiki by 69 Members of Parliament from the region, marking a significant shift in the ongoing power struggle between him and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The MCAs emphasized their belief that Kindiki is the best candidate to unite Mt. Kenya and represent the region’s interests in the Kenya Kwanza government.
“As grassroots leaders, we interact daily with the people and understand the challenges they face,” the MCAs said in their statement. “We’ve identified Prof. Kindiki as the champion of our region’s development and welfare.”
The leaders highlighted Kindiki’s experience and competence, stating that he would ensure the region’s development needs are met alongside those of the entire country. They also criticized the ongoing power struggle between Kindiki and Gachagua, calling it “divisive” and harmful to Mt. Kenya’s reputation.
Echoing President William Ruto’s call for national unity, the MCAs urged all leaders in the region to focus on development rather than political rivalry. “We have become the nation’s laughing stock,” they warned, “but we believe in the unity of Kenya and reject any attempts to divide the country along ethnic lines.”
The MCAs also confirmed that Kindiki had agreed to provide feedback on their endorsement within 30 days. Among the issues they want him to address are their working conditions, pensions, and the ward development fund.
This show of support for Kindiki follows a similar endorsement by over 2,000 Njuri Ncheke elders, further solidifying his position as a key figure in the Mt. Kenya political landscape.
