On the initial day of Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment proceedings, which took place on Monday, representatives from the Meru County Assembly presented their arguments for why the governor should be ousted from her position.
Governor Mwangaza found herself again in the Senate, tasked with addressing the impeachment motion brought against her, marking the third instance in two years she has had to do so. In an effort not to lose a third impeachment motion at the Senate, the Meru County Assembly Members (MCAs) were determined and brought together a formidable team of eight attorneys and two crucial witnesses to support their numerous impeachment claims.
Right from the beginning, the assembly aggressively pursued their case, specifically targeting the governor for her unauthorized decision to cancel the appointment of CPA Virginia Kawira Miriti as the secretary/CEO of the Meru County Public Service Board.
They further charged her with neglecting to designate chairpersons for several boards within the county, including the Meru County Revenue Board, Meru Microfinance Corporation, Meru Youth Service Board, and the Meru County Investment and Development Corporation Board.
The defense team for the governor had a challenging time justifying why manual payroll systems were used to disburse personnel payments totaling Ksh.102.94 million.
Moreover, they had to explain the rationale behind fully compensating Kiambi Christus Manyara, a public communication officer within the governor’s office, including all his salary and benefits despite his custody.
The MCAs appealed to the senators to “listen to their case and approve all the allegations against the governor,” emphasizing the significance of this being the governor’s third impeachment attempt. They argued that the recurrent impeachments were not coincidental.
Governor Mwangaza is slated to present her defense on Tuesday.
