Manchester United is on the verge of securing a deal for Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, with the transaction expected to be over £50m. Reports from the BBC indicate that the Red Devils have offered £38.6m along with £4.3m in additional payments for de Ligt, who captained Erik ten Hag’s Ajax team to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
Moreover, United is prepared to spend £12.9m on Mazraoui, the 26-year-old defender from Morocco. Strengthening the central defense and right-back positions has been marked as essential for Ten Hag’s team. Over the last weekend, ten Hag remarked that the club’s management is “eager” to finalize these deals.
The anticipated arrival of Mazraoui is seen as a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who transferred to United from Crystal Palace in 2019 for £50m. United has also completed a transfer agreement for Wan-Bissaka with West Ham, where the 26-year-old is set for a medical check-up on Monday.
Earlier attempts by United to purchase Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite were unsuccessful, as two offers were rejected due to Everton’s firm’s £70m price tag. At 24, de Ligt emerges as a more budget-friendly yet experienced alternative.
Both De Ligt and Mazraoui were teammates with current United goalkeeper Andre Onana at Ajax. De Ligt’s career took him to Juventus in 2019 for £67.5m, where he clinched a Serie A title and a Coppa Italia over 117 games. He moved to Bayern in 2022 for £65.6m, making 73 appearances and winning the Bundesliga.
