As Kenya continues to grapple with LGBTQ+ rights, recent developments highlight both progress and persistent challenges facing the community.
In December 2024, Jacktone Odhiambo was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of LGBTQ+ activist Edwin Chiloba. Chiloba’s brutal killing in early 2023 sparked national and international outrage, bringing renewed attention to the safety of LGBTQ+ individuals in Kenya. His body was found inside a metal box in Eldoret, a case that fueled conversations about homophobia and violence in the country.
While the conviction was seen as a step toward justice, activists argue that deeper systemic issues remain unaddressed. “This verdict is a win, but it does not erase the fear that queer Kenyans live with every day,” said a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC).
Kenya’s Supreme Court made a landmark decision in 2023 by allowing the NGLHRC to register as an official organization, affirming that denying registration based on sexual orientation was unconstitutional. This was hailed as a victory for LGBTQ+ rights. However, the ruling was met with backlash from religious and political leaders, some of whom continue to push for harsher anti-LGBTQ+ laws.
One such move came in September 2023, when a proposed anti-gay bill sought to impose penalties of up to 50 years in prison for same-sex relations. The bill, similar to Uganda’s harsh anti-LGBTQ+ laws, has sparked concern among human rights organizations.
Violence against LGBTQ+ individuals remains a serious issue. The murder of non-binary lesbian Sheila Lumumba in April 2022 was another painful reminder of the dangers faced by queer Kenyans. Calls for justice and protection continue to grow, yet many cases remain unresolved due to stigma and reluctance by authorities to investigate.
As Kenya stands at a crossroads, the LGBTQ+ community remains resilient. Activists continue to fight for equality, even in the face of discrimination, legal challenges, and threats. “We are not asking for special rights; we are asking for the right to live without fear,” said an LGBTQ+ advocate in Nairobi.
What You Can Do to Support LGBTQ+ Rights in Kenya
LGBTQ+ rights in Kenya are at a critical juncture, and your voice matters. Here’s how you can take action:
1.Support LGBTQ+ Organizations– Groups like the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) and GALCK work tirelessly to protect and advocate for queer rights. Follow and support their initiatives.
2.Raise Awareness – Share this story and others like it to educate more people about the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Kenya. Visibility is power.
3.Speak Up Against Discrimination– Whether online or in person, challenge harmful narratives and stand up for equality. Change starts with conversations.
4.Demand Justice – Many crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals go unpunished. Call on authorities to investigate cases of violence and discrimination.
5.Donate & Volunteer– If you can, contribute to organizations providing legal aid, mental health support, and shelter to LGBTQ+ people in Kenya.
Change is possible, but it requires collective action. Let’s work together for a Kenya where everyone—regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation—can live freely and without fear.
