Kisii University Inducts Over 7,000 First-Year Students after a Successful Orientation Week
Kisii, Kenya – Kisii University has officially welcomed over 7,000 first-year students into its various academic programs following a week of busy admission and orientation activities. This milestone underscores the university’s growth and prominence as one of Kenya’s top public institutions of higher learning, particularly recognized for its competence in fields such as Medicine, Education, and Law.
In his maiden address to the new students and their families, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nathan Ogechi, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the trust placed in Kisii University by the students and their parents. Located in the serene environment of the Gusii Highlands, Prof. Ogechi highlighted the university’s commitment to offering quality education and fostering a conducive learning environment.

“We are delighted to welcome you all to this prestigious institution where you will embark on your academic journeys and pursue your chosen careers in various departments,” said Prof. Ogechi during the induction ceremony. “At Kisii University, we strive to help you navigate your career paths as we provide support, guidance, and quality education throughout your time here.”
The Vice-Chancellor also emphasized the university’s growing reputation as a hub for excellence in higher education. He noted that Kisii University has seen a significant increase in student numbers over the past two years, with more than 10,000 students enrolling last year alone. This growth is a testament to the institution’s rising stature, its diverse range of programs, and the academic rigor it offers.
One of the key factors driving Kisii University’s appeal is its strength in critical fields such as Medicine, Education, and Law, attracting students from all over Kenya and beyond. Many students have expressed interest in forging a long-term association with the institution, owing to its reputation and the opportunities it presents for academic and professional growth.

Prof. Ogechi acknowledged that while the admission process faced minor challenges, the university administration, alongside continuing students, worked diligently to ensure a smooth admission process for all first-year students. “We are immensely proud of how the university community came together to facilitate the successful onboarding of our new students,” he remarked.
He also took the opportunity to commend the efforts of external stakeholders such as the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), which played an active role in the orientation week by educating students on essential topics like financial literacy. “We are grateful for the continued support from bodies like HELB, who help our students not only with financial aid but also by providing crucial knowledge to help them manage their funds responsibly.”
During the ceremony, Prof. Ogechi addressed concerns surrounding the new funding model for higher education, particularly for parents who faced challenges in the application process and the banding. He urged those affected by the government’s banding to remain calm and assured them that they could appeal to have the criteria looked at properly and fairly.
Excitement was also in the air concerning the soon-to-be-established Nyamira University. Prof. Ogechi expressed optimism about the new institution, which will be mentored by Kisii University. “The establishment of Nyamira University is an exciting development. We anticipate that its niche will focus on Technology, complementing the broad range of disciplines already offered at Kisii University,” he said.
Situated in a region known for its stable food security due to its ample rainfall, Kisii County remains an attractive destination for students seeking a balanced academic life. The local climate, combined with the university’s growing infrastructure and strong academic programs, makes Kisii University a top choice for higher education.
As the orientation week comes to a close, students are set to begin their academic programs on Monday, September 9, 2024. Prof. Ogechi extended his best wishes to the new students as they embark on their academic journey and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to supporting them throughout their time at Kisii University.
