Kenya has significantly stepped up its peacekeeping operations in Haiti by deploying an additional 217 police officers to support a multinational force working to combat the escalating gang violence that has destabilized the Caribbean nation. This latest deployment, announced by Kenya’s Interior Minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, took place on Friday, underscoring Kenya’s growing role in global peace and security efforts.

In his statement, Murkomen highlighted the progress made by the Kenya-led mission, emphasizing its effectiveness in reducing gang-related violence. “The Kenya-led mission has made tremendous progress in reducing gang violence, earning praise across the globe,” he said. To mark the occasion, Murkomen shared a photograph with some of the officers aboard the plane as they prepared to depart for their mission.
Kenya first sent police officers to Haiti in June 2024, and this new group brings the total number of Kenyan personnel deployed to more than 600. President William Ruto has committed to sending 1,000 police officers as part of the United Nations-backed mission to restore stability in Haiti. This highlights Kenya’s strong commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis in the Caribbean nation.
Haiti has been grappling with a severe wave of gang violence that has left more than 700,000 people homeless. Armed groups have seized control of large parts of the country, forcing residents to flee their homes. Many of those displaced are now living in overcrowded, makeshift shelters with limited access to basic necessities, creating a dire humanitarian situation.

The Kenya-led mission represents a historic effort to stabilize Haiti, where the security situation has deteriorated rapidly over recent years. By providing highly trained officers, Kenya is playing a crucial role in restoring law and order, protecting civilians, and creating conditions for long-term peace and development.
This deployment also underscores Kenya’s broader commitment to international peacekeeping and its leadership in addressing global security challenges. The mission has drawn global recognition, with many commending Kenya for its decisive action in supporting Haiti during a time of profound crisis. Beyond its immediate goals, the mission reflects Kenya’s dedication to fostering peace and stability on the global stage.
