Jacton Odhiambo Sentenced to 50 Years for Murder of LGBTQ Activist Edwin Kiptoo Alias “Chiloba”

Date: December 16, 2024

Eldoret, Kenya – Jacton Odhiambo, who was convicted by the High Court in Eldoret for the brutal murder of fashion designer and LGBTQ activist Edwin Kiptoo, also known as “Chiloba,” has been sentenced to 50 years in prison. The sentencing, delivered today by Justice Reuben Nyakundi, follows the conclusion of a high-profile case that has drawn widespread attention over the past two years.

The judge ruled that Odhiambo, who had a close personal relationship with Kiptoo, should serve a lengthy prison term for the heinous crime. The court described the two men as having been in an intimate relationship at the time of the murder.

In his statement, Justice Nyakundi emphasized that Odhiambo’s actions warranted a severe sentence. “That you have not committed another murder case does not diminish the gravity of your crime,” Nyakundi said, underscoring the severity of the violence Odhiambo inflicted upon Kiptoo.

The murder took place in 2022, sparking outrage within the LGBTQ community and among human rights activists. Kiptoo, a prominent figure in Kenya’s fashion industry and LGBTQ advocacy, was found dead under mysterious circumstances. His murder became a focal point for discussions surrounding LGBTQ rights and the challenges faced by the community in a country where homosexuality is criminalized.

Kiptoo’s family expressed relief upon hearing the court’s decision. They welcomed the 50-year sentence, stating that it will bring some measure of closure to the ongoing grief and trauma caused by their loved one’s untimely death. The family also thanked the court for the thorough investigation and the justice that was served.

“This sentence, although nothing can bring Edwin back, will allow us to begin healing,” the family said in a statement. “We appreciate the efforts of all those who worked tirelessly to bring the truth to light and ensure justice was served.”

Legal Implications in Kenya’s Societal Context

The case also highlighted the complex legal and societal dynamics regarding LGBTQ rights in Kenya. In Kenya, marriage is legally recognized only between a man and a woman, and LGBTQ individuals often face significant stigma and discrimination. Despite this, the court’s acknowledgment of the intimate relationship between Kiptoo and Odhiambo brought attention to the challenges LGBTQ people continue to face in a country where homosexuality remains criminalized.

Justice Nyakundi’s ruling has sparked mixed reactions, with some human rights activists expressing hope that it will encourage a broader conversation about LGBTQ rights in Kenya. Others, however, have voiced concerns about the safety and treatment of LGBTQ individuals in a country where their existence is still largely marginalized.

Closure for Kiptoo’s Family

For Kiptoo’s family, the closure of this case marks the end of a painful chapter. In a brief statement, they noted that although the sentence could never bring back their beloved Edwin, it would help them begin the difficult process of grieving and healing from the loss.

“It is not the end, but it is a step towards peace,” the family said. “We hope that this case will serve as a reminder of the importance of justice for every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or identity.”

A Final Word on Jacton Odhiambo’s Case

Jacton Odhiambo’s case is now officially closed. The 50-year prison sentence, handed down after a lengthy investigation and trial, stands as a firm reminder of the consequences of taking a life, regardless of the personal relationships involved.

While some continue to debate the broader implications of the case on Kenya’s LGBTQ community, the court’s decision has provided at least some sense of justice for those affected by the tragic death of Edwin Kiptoo.

As the case concludes, the focus now shifts to ongoing conversations about the rights and protections of Kenya’s LGBTQ citizens, and the hope that the nation may one day embrace greater acceptance and understanding.
