The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) is issuing a final reminder for customers to update their prepaid meters before the August 31st deadline to avoid service interruptions. This alert follows a mid-June campaign urging prepaid customers to upgrade their meter software to keep their electricity service uninterrupted.
KPLC’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror is pleased with the response: “We appreciate the positive feedback on our update initiative and thank those who have already completed the process. We’ve scheduled updates for all prepaid meters and encourage those who haven’t done so to act before the deadline to avoid disruptions.”
To complete the update, customers must buy at least one unit of electricity and enter the codes sent in their token SMS. Kenya Power will then send two SMS codes: a reset and an update. This update process is free.
Before starting the update, customers should ensure all previous tokens have been entered into their meters. Missing the deadline will result in the meter being unable to accept new tokens.
This update effort is part of a global push to standardize prepaid meters using the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) to enhance token security.
Dr. Siror added, “Our phased approach has helped manage customer demand and reduce system delays, making it easier for customers to purchase tokens and receive update codes.”
For those facing issues with the SMS platform, Kenya Power advises using the company’s self-service platform by dialing *977# for help.
With the deadline approaching, KPLC stresses the importance of updating meters on time to ensure a continuous electricity supply for all prepaid customers.
