Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing mounting pressure as some Kenya Kwanza lawmakers push for his impeachment, accusing him of being a political liability. In response, Gachagua and his allies argue that there is a coordinated effort to undermine his position in government.
During a recent event in Githunguri, Kiambu County, Gachagua addressed his supporters in Central Kenya, seeking solidarity. Speaking in his native language, he reminded them of the pivotal role the region played in his election alongside President William Ruto. “You are the ones who voted for us. Are you tired of me? I don’t think so. Some say they’re tired, but who are they? We came here, and I asked you to vote for us as a team. Please allow us to finish our term,” Gachagua said to a gathering of coffee farmers.
He emphasized that his mandate came from the people, and only they should decide his fate. “If I have done anything wrong, the President should come here and tell you, and you can make the decision,” he added.
His allies, including Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa and Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, were more direct in their criticism, urging President Ruto to respect both Gachagua and the voters who put them in office. “Even if you don’t respect your deputy, at least respect the people of the mountain who gave you that seat,” Senator Thang’wa said.
However, in Kericho County, a different faction of Kenya Kwanza lawmakers openly called for Gachagua’s removal, branding him a hindrance to the government’s agenda. Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot suggested that Gachagua’s continued presence in office was disruptive, stating, “If it’s no longer tenable, release this guy from the job.”
The growing divide between the President and his deputy is raising concerns about the administration’s ability to deliver on the promises made to the Kenyan people. With tensions escalating, Gachagua’s political future remains uncertain as both sides continue to clash.
