Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssef rejects Ksh 6 billion from the Kenyan government to step down for Raila Odinga.

In a significant development within African Union (AU) politics, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has been implicated in allegations concerning a substantial bribe from the Kenyan government. Reports suggest that Youssouf was offered 6 billion Kenyan shillings (approximately $2.24 million) to withdraw his candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship in favor of Kenya’s candidate, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Despite these allegations, Youssouf has firmly refuted claims of stepping down from the race. According to sources close to him, he remains committed to his campaign and is actively seeking support across the continent. His upcoming diplomatic engagements include visits to Tanzania and Senegal, aimed at bolstering his bid for the AUC leadership.

The AUC chairmanship is a pivotal role within the AU, serving as the Chief Executive Officer and legal representative of the organization. The position is currently held by Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat, who has been in office since 2017. The election for the new chairperson is scheduled for next month, with candidates required to secure a two-thirds majority vote to win. The successful candidate will serve a four-year term, renewable once.

These allegations of bribery have sparked discussions about the integrity of the election process for the AUC chairmanship. Observers are calling for transparency and adherence to ethical standards to ensure that the selection of the new chairperson reflects the democratic values and principles upon which the African Union was founded.

As the election date approaches, the AU member states and the international community will be closely monitoring the developments surrounding the candidacies of Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Raila Odinga, emphasizing the importance of a fair and transparent electoral process.
