Today,Homa Bay County bid farewell to Albert Omondi Ojwang,a dedicated teacher who lost his life under unclear circumstances while in police custody. Albert,who taught at Voi Kituma Secondary School,will be laid to rest in Nyawango Village,Kokwanyo Kakello in homabay county,surrounded by family, friends, and prominent politicians.

The funeral,which was expected to draw large crowds,has be attended by notable figures including Babu Owino,Embakasi East MP;Millie Odhiambo,Suba North MP; Gladys Wanga,Governor of Homa Bay County;and Eve Obara,Kabondo Kasipul representative. These leaders will join mourners in paying their respects to a man whose life was marked by dedication to education and community.
Albert’s journey was one of passion and commitment.Born on July 7-1994-in Kakoth,HomaBay County,he pursued his education at St.Mary Goretti Mawego Primary School and later at Barani Secondary School.He graduated from Pwani University in 2023,equipped with the skills and knowledge to make a difference in the lives of his students. As a teacher, Albert was known for his ability to connect with his students,teaching subjects like Christian Religious Education and History & Government with enthusiasm and dedication.
The circumstances surrounding Albert’s death have sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.According to reports,Albert was arrested on June 7/2025,over a social media post and was taken into custody. He died on June 8/2025,while in police custody,with the police attributing his death to a suspected suicide attempt. The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has condemned the incident, describing it as state-sanctioned brutality and demanding action against those responsible.
As Albert Omondi Ojwang is laid to rest, his family,friends,and colleagues remember him for his love of teaching,his passion for life,and his commitment to making a difference. May he rest in peace.
